Charlie Chaplin visited Waterville for many years with his wife Oona and their children, according to members of the Chaplin family, Waterville afforded him a tranquil haven where he could enjoy spending time with his family in relative anonymity.Many locals remember him strolling along the seafront promenade which runs along the centre of the village, his privacy always respected. One of Chaplin’s favourite pursuits while in Waterville was fishing on Lough Currane.

The Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival honours the pioneering spirit of a great film maker and advocate for social change. The festival includes a hugely entertaining range of events, film screenings, workshops, comedy, Guinness World Record Attempt – The largest gathering of people dressed as Charlie Chaplin and Chaplin themed street entertainment and much, much more.
